9 Top New True Crime Podcasts of January 2025

Kicking off 2025 with the best new true crime podcasts that I have listened to this January and they take us all over the world.

1. Poisoned - Podshape.

Poisoned is a gripping true crime podcast covering the on-going criminal case against an Australian influencer (with over 100,000 followers) who is accused of intentionally poisoning her young daughter. The influencer is thought to have been intentionally poisoning her daughter (who does have a known pre-existing medical condition) so that she can chronicle the illness online, gain sympathy, followers and subsequently benefit monetarily, through donations (GoFundMe), sponsorships, gifts and so on. She is accused of:

“… poisoning her baby girl to elicit donations and boost online followers.” (Source here).

Her actions have led to three very serious charges - torture, making child exploitation material and fraud.

“Between August and October, detectives say that the woman - from the Sunshine Coast region - gave the child several prescription and pharmacy medicines, without approval. She went to great lengths to obtain the unauthorised medications and cover up her behaviour, they alleged, including using leftover medicine for a different person in their house.” (Source here).

Of course there is a lot more to this complicated story and it is all carefully laid out and explained in the course of this true crime podcast. There are eleven episodes so far and a lot more to come!

This true crime story is disturbing, absolutely shocking and frightening.

2. Uncover: Sea of Lies - Hosted By Sam Mullins - CBC.

Host Sam Mullins, who brought us the excellent true crime Chameleon: Wild boys podcast is back with this brand new podcast Uncover: Sea of Lies and I am hooked.

In this true crime podcast:

“A body is pulled from the ocean, and a race against time to capture one of the world’s most wanted criminals begins.” (Source here).

I REALLY don’t want to give any spoilers for this true crime podcast as it is an absolutely riveting story that is told so well in the podcast. The scale of the planning, deception and criminal activity involved are mind-blowing.

The first three episodes are available now so get listening and caught up before episode four drops!

3. REAL Presents: Bad Grandpa - By Naomi Channell.

Naomi Channell is back with a brand new six-part true crime series and I (of course) binged the whole lot on the day it was released. Bad Grandpa is deep diving into a cult, the “Children of God”, who was founded in the 1960s by David Brandt Berg. Naomi Channell spent over 500 hours researching this cult and her hard work has paid off. This true crime podcast is excellent.

Honestly, I can’t even begin to describe the actions of the cult leader and the horrifying crimes that he committed. From “flirty fishing” to his “life with Grandpa” videos, you will be left dumbfounded and speechless. Naomi lays everything out, but she is so cognisant of the sensitive, and at times explicit, nature of the information that she is sharing. I think it is best that you listen for yourself and that I do not go into the details here. All six episodes are available now.

Before I go, if you have read some of my other true crime podcast blogs then you will probably be familiar with Naomi’s other excellent true crime podcast series that I have featured but if not then here they are:

4. Where is Jón? - Hosted By Liam O’Brien & Anna Marsibil Clausen - RTÉ and RÚV.

This new Irish true crime podcast is guaranteed to be a winner when you look at the calibre of the past true crimes podcasts that this team have brought us such as the previously featured The Real Carrie Jade, Runaway Joe, Finding Samantha, The Nobody Zone and the non-true crime but equally fascinating Tiger Roll podcast.

Where is Jón? is a six-part true crime podcast series investigating the February 2019 disappearance of an Icelandic man named Jón Jónsson from Dublin, Ireland. Jón Jónsson was in Dublin to attended the Dublin Poker Festival. On the second day of his trip, Jón Jónsson walked out of his hotel (The Bonnington) in Dublin at approximately 11am, he was briefly seen on CCTV near the hotel shortly after and then he simply vanished.

In this podcast we hear from Jón Jónsson’s then partner Jana who saw and spoke to Jón shortly before he disappeared and she gives her account of the events leading up to his disappearance. We also hear from his brothers who travelled to Dublin as soon as they could to search for their brother. Some of the people who attended the poker festival with Jón the day before he disappeared also tell their stories. This is a very mysterious case. Your heart will break for Jón Jónsson’s children who just want to know what happened to him.

The first three episodes are out now.

5. The Con: Kaitlyn’s Baby (Season Two ) - Hosted By Sarah Treleaven - CBC & BBC World Service.

I was very excited to see that The Con was back with a brand new season and a new “con-artist” true crime story. The first season brought us the excellent true crime podcast Love Janessa so I was pretty certain that season two would be another binge worthy true crime tale and I can confirm it absolutely is.

The Con: Kaitlyn’s Baby is a six-part true crime investigation into a woman named Kaitlyn Braun who loves to spin fictional stories and present them as truths. Kaitlyn has tricked more than one doula into believing that she is pregnant as a result of a sexual assault and/or that she has given birth to a still born baby and many more lies in-between:

“Kaitlyn Braun, a pregnant young woman in crisis, takes dozens of birth workers through an escalating series of disasters – rape, baby loss, and even a coma. One by one, the doulas struggle to support her, to grieve with her, and even to save her life as they are led down a distressing path. And then truth comes out.” (Source here).

We hear from some of the doulas who were duped by Kaitlyn, as well as from a former close friend of Kaitlyn who was also taken in by her untruths. I think the real question is “Why is Kaitlyn (or why would anyone) do this?” - unfathomable!

Honestly, this true crime podcast will have you constantly thinking “what the f*ck is going on!”. It is just inconceivable that someone would tell such horrendous lies and cause such mental and physical distress to innocent people.

The first four episodes are available now - clear your diary for this one!

6. Murder on Songbird Road - Hosted By Lauren Bright Pacheco & Bob Motta - iHeartPodcasts.

In Murder on Songbird Road the hosts are investigating the 2020 murder of eleven year old Jade Beasley in South Illinois, USA:

“On December 5th of 2020, a blended family was ripped apart when police responded to a 911 call placed from a rural area in Marion, Illinois. At the scene, they would find an 11-year-old girl, brutally murdered and her hysterical 32-year old stepmother.” (Source here).

Julia Bevely, Jade’s stepmother was in fact later arrested, charged and found guilty of Jade’s murder. The hosts present all the facts of this case and I tend to agree with them (from what I have heard so far) that the police investigation did not appear to be that thorough. It seems that Julia Bevely was regarded as the perpetrator from the beginning (despite the evidence, or lack there of) and thus no other potential suspects were properly considered or investigated.

There are five episodes available so far so get listening and make up your own mind about Julia’s guilt or innocence.

7. Dakota Spotlight: Homicide at the House of Bottles (Season 11) - Hosted By James Wolner.

In the latest season of the true crime podcast Dakota Spotlight: Homicide at the House of Bottles host James Wolner is delving into the February 21st 1999 murder of Robbie Rahrich in Bismarck, North Dakota (USA). Robbie Rahrich was only 25 years old when he was shot and killed while working his shift at a liqueur store (named House of Bottles) in Bismarck:

“Featuring immersive soundscapes and interviews with detectives, family, friends, and even the convicted killer, this season examines the layers of a crime that shook a community—and the enduring questions of justice, rehabilitation, and forgiveness. More than a true crime story, Homicide at House of Bottles is about the lives forever changed by it.” (Source here).

This true crime podcast is really interesting. I think it is greatly enhanced by the various interviews and first person accounts (including with the convicted killer) that we hear throughout the episodes, which give us a true account of what actually happened on the night of the shooting and in the aftermath.

The first five episodes are out now.

8. Drop Dead Serious: Uncle Peter with Ashleigh Banfield.

Drop Dead Serious: Uncle Peter plunges into the life and crimes of disgraced former fashion mogul and businessman Peter Nygard. This is not the first time that I have listened to and featured a true crime podcast about Peter Nygard. Way back in my Top 12 Podcast Picks for February 2021 I included the true crime podcast Evil By Design. This too is a really excellent podcast about Peter Nygard and his loathsome criminal actions. However, a lot has happened in this case since 2021 so this new true crime podcast can help to fill that gap.

In Uncle Peter we hear from one of the people who was closest to Peter Nygard; his niece Angela. Even though Peter Nygard was “uncle Peter” to Angela, their close familial relationship wasn’t enough to save her from his abusive behaviour. Host Ashleigh Banfield has been best friends with Angela for years and their close friendship is obvious when you hear the interviews between them, that feature in this true crime podcast:

“Peter Nygard was my best friend’s uncle, but would, one day, become the world’s most reviled serial rapist. How did it happen? What made him into this monster? My friend opens up Peter’s secret vault of exclusive pictures, videos, phone calls, voice mails, memos, letters…even his little black book.” (Source here).

This is a really great true crime podcast, packed full of information, some of which was not known publicly until now. We hear a lot about what happened within the Nygard family and what they really thought of Peter Nygard.

The first three episodes are available now.

9. The Binge Crimes: Deadly Fortune - Sony Music Entertainment.

This true crime podcast begins with the death of Diane McIver. We learn that Diane was shot and killed by her husband Tex, as they both sat in the back seat of their friends car (she was dropping them home). How did a simple journey home after an enjoyable night out turn into a murder investigation?

“Tex and Diane McIver were an Atlanta power couple; he the cowboy lawyer and political king maker, she a beautiful and charismatic executive. Their storybook marriage comes to an end in what appeared to be a freak tragic moment.” (Source here).

In Deadly Fortune we learn all about Diane and Tex, who they were as individuals and who they were as a married couple. Sometimes these accounts differ depending on who we are hearing from - were they happily married? or were they headed for divorce?. Similarly, ideas about whether Tex accidentally or purposefully shot his wife are also presented. I have listened to all the available episodes and I still don’t know who is to be believed.

If you are looking for a true crime podcast to binge then this is a great option as all eight episodes are now available - the only annoying thing is all the advert breaks!
