Top New True Crime Podcasts of July & August 2024

OK, I have been slack with the blogs the last few months and so this blog article is late BUT I do have some great new true crime podcasts for you to get stuck into!

1. The Real Carrie Jade - Hosted By Justine Stafford - RTE Documentary On One.

Starting off with an excellent new Irish true crime podcast recommendation, The Real Carrie Jade which just had to be top of this list.

I already featured a podcast about “Carrie Jade” in my Top New True Crime Podcasts of November and December 2023 blog, entitled Carrie Jade Does Not Exist. However, even if you have already listened to that, this new podcast from RTE is (in my opinion) even better, filled with new and different information and packed full of great interviews with people who knew “Carrie”.

As you might have already guessed, “Carrie Jade” is not real, she is simply:

“A young woman has spent much of her life pretending to be someone she’s not. We’re just one of many people she’s fooled. She finds her victims right across Ireland and the UK. And, despite several convictions and being unmasked many times, she shows no sign of stopping…” (Source here).

All seven episodes are available now and I can guarantee you, that once you start listening, you will not be able to stop so you better clear some space in your diary for this one!

2. Casefile Presents: Troubled Waters - By Julia Robson & Clare McGrath.

Troubled Waters is a gripping Australian true crime podcast presented by Casefile who have brought us some other excellent true crime podcasts that I have featured in the past. In this ten part true crime podcast series hosts Julia and Clare are undertaking an in-depth investigation into the tragic death of twenty-four year old Louisa Ioannidis, in Victoria, Australia:

“Beautiful, courageous, and vulnerable, yet her untimely death barely received a two-line report in a small local newspaper. Her body was discovered by passers-by in a local creek, clad in a pink dressing gown. Despite being a strong swimmer, police quickly determined there were no suspicious circumstances. Yet no one has been able to explain how or why she came to enter the creek.” (Source here).

This podcast will have you hooked from the start as you learn all about Louisa Ioannidis’ life, her untimely death and the distressing and enigmatic events that surround it:

“Despite being a strong swimmer, police quickly determined there were no suspicious circumstances. Yet no one has been able to explain how or why she came to enter the creek.” (Source here).

This is the perfect podcast to binge as all ten episodes are available now.

3. My Sister The Murderer - By Ryan Dwyer - Podshape.

Another excellent Australian true crime podcast is third on the list this month. My Sister The Murderer tells the story of Brittney Jade Dwyer who, at age nineteen, murdered her eight-one year old grandfather Robert Whitwell in his own home. However, this true crime podcast has one major difference to most other true crime podcasts. In this podcast, the crimes of Brittany and all the events surrounding it are told by Brittany’s own brother Alex. This podcast also features interviews with Brittany’s devastated mother Tonya (Tonya’s father Robert Whitwell was murdered by her daughter Brittney).

“Each episode delves into the events leading up to the tragic day, the aftermath, and the profound impact on their family’s darkest moments and the secrets that get revealed as the story unfolds.” (Source here).

This is a truly engrossing story in which we learn all about Brittany’s life prior to the murder and are privy to facets of the case that normally only the family (and perhaps the police) would have knowledge of. Of course this story is heartbreaking and Brittany’s actions absolutely shattered their family unit; nothing would ever be the same again.

“This is a raw, real, and deeply personal account of a tragedy that changed their lives forever.” (Source here).

An extraordinary true crime podcast that had me waiting eagerly for each new episode to be released (I wouldn’t let myself Google anything) but now all eight episodes are available and waiting for you!

4. Thief at the British Museum - By Katie Razzall - Shadow World & BBC Sounds.

This true crime podcast is a little lighter then the second and third spots on this list. Thief at the British Museum is a true crime podcast telling us the unbelievable inside story of:

“… how ancient treasures disappeared from one of the world’s most famous museums. And how one man believes he uncovered a thief.” (Source here).

I really enjoyed this true crime podcast investigating the theft of precious artefacts from within the British Museum. Host Katie Razzall digs into these mysterious thefts which are being committed by a member of staff at the British Museum and how these thefts went undiscovered for so long! Razzall reveals how:

“… a Danish gem dealer almost single-handedly identified a man he believes had been stealing precious artefacts from inside the British Museum.” (Source here).

The Danish gem dealer is a real character and contributes greatly to this podcast. So, do they catch the thief? Do they recover the lost artefacts? All nine episodes are available now and you will have to listen to find out how this remarkable true crime investigation concludes!

5. Dangerous Memories - By Grace Hughes-Hallett - Tortoise Media.

At the centre of this true crime podcast is an “intriguing therapist figure” (with an Irish connection) named Anne Craig whose work and methods are called into question when a number of her clients/patients begin to alienate themselves from their families and friends and become increasingly isolated from the outside world in general:

“One by one they start to visit her for sessions and, for some, it will lead to disastrous consequences.” (Source here).

Anne’s patients become dependant on her in an almost a cult like manner. Her patients are subjected to hours of therapy and “memories” (false memories) began to emerge through these intense therapy sessions. These “memories” ultimately lead her patients to turn their backs on their families and friends; one patient we hear from in this podcast cut herself off from her mother for six years having previously shared a very close mother-daughter relationship.

In this true crime podcast we hear from some of Anne’s ex-patients and their families as they give us thorough accounts of their experiences, explain the how and why of the control that Anne had over them. The stories seem somewhat preposterous but they are genuine. Anne Craig denies all accusations.

All six episodes are available now.

6. Blood on the Dance Floor - By Jordan Dunbar - BBC Radio Live 5.

In this true crime podcast we are transported back to the 1990s in Northern Ireland, to 1997 to be exact and to the city of Belfast where a young gay twenty-four year old police officer named Darren Bradshaw is murdered:

“He was just 24 years old when he was shot dead in front of hundreds of people. His brutal murder by terrorists sparked fears of a return to all out violence as the new Labour government under Tony Blair sought to bring peace to Northern Ireland - on the road to the Good Friday Agreement.” (Source here).

In Blood on the Dance Floor host Jordan Dunbar, who grew up in Belfast and was a comedian and drag performer in the city, tries to establish how and why Darren Bradshaw was killed. In doing so, Dunbar uncovers:

“… stories of bigotry, bravery and betrayal.” (Source here).

Dunbar exposes how Darren’s story:

“… brings to life the struggle of being gay in The Troubles, how Belfast got its first Pride parade only in 1991 and its very first openly gay club in 1994. The Parliament bar where Darren was tragically shot dead.” (Source here).

This true crime podcasts series is packed full of interviews with people who knew Darren including work colleagues and friends as well as “pioneers” who fought, and were responsible for, creating safe gay spaces in Belfast. A super interesting true crime podcast that deals with many difficult topics, highlights struggles and creates awareness.

All six episodes are available now.

7. Swiss Murder Mysteries: The Seewen Murder Mystery (Season 2) - By Rudolph Isler - Playground Media Production.

Rudolph Isler is back with a brand new season of his hit Swiss true crime podcast Swiss Murder Mysteries. I featured his first season in my Top New True Crime Podcasts of August and September 2023 blog which investigated The Crystal Cave Murders. In this new season, Rudolph is investigating another true crime case, The Seewen Murder Mystery which takes us back to July 7th 1976 in Seewen, Switzerland.

According to Rudolph, this is one of Switzerland’s “most talked about and perplexing murder cases” and when you learn that it involved the ruthless murder of five family members and a culprit that has never been caught, you quickly understand why this case has captivated Switzerland.

The victims were:

“… executed with chilling precision. Shot at point-blank range in the forehead, none of the victims resisted or attempted to escape. This crime bears a haunting resemblance to a Mafia contract killing, and its motives continue to elude the police, shrouded in mystery to this day.” (Source here).

The nature of these killings was incredibly brutal, cold-blooded and shocking. Rudolph is an excellent story teller, giving the listener the right amount of information and detail so you can really envision the “scene of the crime” and the victims whose lives were cut short. I also really recommend checking out the podcast website to see photographs and maps of the scene/area where these despicable murders took place.

The first three episodes are available now and as new episodes are released fortnightly you have time to get caught up before episode four drops!

8. Intrigue: Worse Than Murder - Presented By Jane MacSorley & Simon Farquhar - BBC Radio 4.

Intrigue: Worse Than Murder is a true crime podcast that investigates the December 29th 1969 kidnapping of Muriel McKay, a shocking case of mistaken identity. Muriel McKay was kidnapped from her home in Wimbledon (UK) while her husband was at work. Muriel McKay’s husband Alick was an executive at News Limited and deputy to media proprietor Rupert Murdoch. This is where the mistaken identity part comes into play, Muriel McKay was kidnapped when she was mistaken for Rupert Murdoch’s then wife, Anna Maria Murdoch. Muriel McKay was never seen again.

“One winter’s night in 1969, kidnappers targeting Rupert Murdoch’s wife abducted Muriel McKay by mistake.” (Source here).

This is an absolutely shocking story, fuelled by the tabloid press and ruthless unhinged kidnappers with an unrealistic ransom demand. There is SO much more to this true crime story but I do not want to give any more spoilers!

There are six episodes available already.

9. The Truth About Amy - Hosted By Liam Bartlett & Alison Sandy - 7News Podcasts.

From the creators of the supremely popular 2019 true crime podcast The Lady Vanishes comes this new true crime podcast The Truth About Amy.

The story of Amy Wensley is a complicated one and the circumstances surrounding her death are no different. Amy was just twenty-four years old and a mum to two children when she was found dead via gunshot wound in her home in Serpentine, Australia:

“Amy’s body was found slumped behind the door of her bedroom, with a fatal head wound from a shotgun round inflicted at close range.” (Source here).

Amy’s death was initially treated as a suicide but now the case has been reopened:

“A decade after her death was written off as suicide, the case is reopened for a fourth time… this time as a homicide.” (Source here).

Honestly, this is a very complex case and I can’t even begin to try to give a synopsis, you really just need to listen to each episode. There is so much information, lots of interviews and opinions. I have listened to all ten of the available episodes and it seems that we still don’t know what happened to Amy but perhaps we are closer now than ever before.

10. Chameleon: Doctor Miracle (Season 8) - Hosted By Larrison Campbell - Campside Media, Sony Music Entertainment & Dorothy Street Pictures.

Rounding up this list with one of my favourite true crime podcast series, season eight of Chameleon: Doctor Miracle. This season host Larrison Campbell brings us the story of loathsome Dr. Robert O. Young and his “wellness centre” which was situated in a picturesque area in the mountains of Southern California. As you might have guessed, Dr. Young was no miracle worker and his centre doesn’t exactly exude all things wellness:

“… Dr. Robert O. Young, attracted wealthy clientele with his “groundbreaking” health protocols and friendly, family-man persona. But beneath the serene surface, Miracle Ranch harbored a dark secret. The people who stayed there didn’t get better; they got worse.” (Source here).

Former patients and employees feature in this captivating and mind-blowing true crime podcast about a corrupt doctor lacking in morals who (it seems) always puts money/wealth above peoples lives… and don’t even get me started on his “lifesaving alkaline diet”!

All six episodes are available now so you can devour this true crime podcast in one go!
