Top 12 True Crime Podcasts of February 2022:

I am back with more riveting true crime Podcasts for February 2022! These are the twelve true crime Podcasts that have had me hooked during January and into February. So many that I just had to make this list to share with you.

1. Art Fraud - Hosted By Alec Baldwin - Cavalry Audio & iHeartPodcasts.

We are starting off with a brand new Podcast from Cavalry hosted by Alec Baldwin and written by Michael Shnayerson. Art Fraud is a eight episode true crime investigative Podcast which:

“… chronicles the fall of the one of the oldest, and most revered, galleries in New York City: The Knoedler.” (Source here).

More about the Knoedler Gallery:

“The Knoedler Gallery, one of the one of the oldest, and most revered, galleries in New York City. In operation since 1846 and home to some of the cities greatest artists, the gallery’s fortune changed the moment an unassuming woman walked through the door with a canvas under her arm allegedly painted by the Abstract Expressionist master Mark Rothko. So began a 17 year relationship that would result in the sale of nearly 40 paintings from the likes of Motherwell, de Kooning and Jackson Pollack totaling more than 80 million dollars. The only problem was that they were all fake.” (Source here).

In this Podcast series we are promised never before heard interviews with “the mastermind behind the years long con”. There are two episodes available now and I am looking forward to episode three!

2. Fake Psychic - Hosted By Vicky Baker - BBC Radio 4.

If like me, you were a big fan of the Podcast Fake Heiress then you have to check out this brand new BBC 4 Radio Podcast series entitled Fake Psychic.

Host Vicky Baker returns this time to tell us what she describes as a “timeless” story as humans have “always had a fascination with the afterlife”. This Podcast is a:

“… deep dive into the life of a complex character who operated in this shady world.” (Direct Quote Vicky Baker Episode One).

At the core of this story is a renowned psychic named Lamar Keene who:

“… confessed to being part of an underground network he called the “psychic mafia”.” (Source here).

The best news is that ALL six episodes of this brand new Podcast were released on February 1st 2022 so you can download and binge them all in one day like me! :-)

3. Hooked - Hosted By Josh Dean for Apple TV+ & Campside Media.

The first episode of this Podcast was released in November 2021 but I only stumbled upon it in January this year. It is SO good and as we are late to the party, all nine episodes are available now and there is even an additional tenth bonus episode too.

Tony Hathaway is the criminal at the centre of this true crime story. However, before Tony Hathaway turned to crime, he was:

“… a shape-shifting professional who confounded multiple police departments and the FBI — he was a top design engineer at Boeing, one of America’s most important companies. Hathaway traveled the world in business class, working on the 747.” (Source here).

However, while Hathaway’s life and career appeared outwardly successful, under the surface Hathaway was hiding a big secret, he was addicted to OxyContin and it was this addiction that led to his demise and his evolution into “a masterful bank robber”. This is gripping story that will have you captivated from the start:

“When Tony Hathaway was arrested outside a Seattle bank in February 2014, it brought an end to one of the most prolific bank robbery streaks in American history. Hathaway robbed 30 banks in a single year, all within a 30-mile radius of his suburban home. But that’s not the most surprising part of this story.” (Source here)

“HOOKED is a different kind of crime story that takes listeners on an exceptional and very personal tour of America’s opioid epidemic.” (Source here).

I hope you enjoy this Podcast as much as I did!

4. Mafia Tapes - Hosted By Celia Aniskovich - From I.D.

This is an eight part true crime series that:

“… dives into the legend of the notorious DeMeo Crew, and their once trusted associate Dominick Montiglio. The series tells the story of Dominick’s life, at the center of one of the most vicious mafia crews in history. With access to newly discovered audio tapes featuring Dominick, this isn’t your average mob tale. This is the real story of a man battling with the two sides of his nature: the hero and the villain; the truth teller and the con man; the lover and the fighter; the mortal and the immortal. Dominick Montiglio, in his own words, for the last time.” (Source here).

In the first episode we are introduced to Dominick and hear all about his early life and his slow transition into “a life of crime”. In the second episode we meet the DeMeo Crew and Dominick becomes further embedded in their criminal world despite his best efforts to avoid it. Then in episodes three the DeMeo Crew register on the Police radar and investigations begin… and that is all we have so far!

From the three episodes that are currently available I can already say that this is a crazy mafia story filled with in-depth insider knowledge and plenty of details. Waiting for episode four to drop!

5. An Absurb Result - Hosted By Jule Banville for Art19/Mopac Audio.

An eight year old girl is the victim of a horrific assault:

“In the pre-dawn of March 20, 1987, a man moved a swingset closer to a house on Virginia Lane in Billings, Montana. He used it to climb into a bathroom window. He walked up the stairs and assaulted an 8-year-old girl in her bed. Six others in her family were home, but no one heard what happened and he left without getting caught.” (Source here).

The police investigation begins and even leads to an arrest, but have they arrested the right person?

“The crime begins a decades-long recovery process for the girl and her family. It’s also the start of a maddening search for justice that involves a suspect, an exoneration and DNA evidence that ultimately exposes a loophole in the US legal system.” (Source here).

I do not want to give the story away so I will leave it there. As this Podcast was released in October 2021, all seven episodes are available now!

6. Chameleon: Wild Boys - Hosted By Sam Mullins for Campside Media.

This is the latest series from Chameleon and this time we are transported back to 2003 when:

“… two half-starved young men turned up in a small Canadian town telling an incredible story of survival.” (Source here).

The boys claim that they have been raised in a small remote cabin in the wilderness of British Columbia, in the outskirts of Revelstoke by their parents Mary and Joseph who are the only human contact they have ever had:

“… this was their first-ever contact with society — they’d never seen a TV, gone to school, or registered for IDs.” (Source here).

Taken in by a local community, the boys receive much needed help and the nickname “Bush Boys” is born! Of course, all is not as it seems and the boys have some explaining to do!

There are currently three episodes available.

Some other great Chameleon and/or Campside Media Podcasts include:

7. White Hot Hate - Hosted By Michelle Shephard for CBC Podcasts.

At the centre of this six-part Podcast series is a undercover investigation by journalist Ryan Thorpe into a white supremacist group:

“A violent, white supremacist ideology is spreading around the world, with believers trying to create chaos, in order to seize control. When recruitment posters for a group calling itself The Base start to appear in Manitoba, Winnipeg Free Press journalist Ryan Thorpe decides to go undercover…and infiltrate. Ryan meets with a Canadian Armed Forces reservist trying to establish a local neo-Nazi cell, and discovers that he is planning attacks and destruction abroad.” (Source here).

In addition to Ryan’s undercover investigation host Michelle Shephard who herself is a veteran national security journalist “explores the rise of white supremacist accelerationism.”.

Another great CBC Podcast that was released in November 2021 and so with all the episodes available to me, I couldn’t resist another Podcast binge day!

8. Who Killed Bob? - Hosted By Eve Ash & Colin McLaren - Podshape.

This ten part Podcast series focuses on:

“… murder, intrigue and injustice following the disappearance of Bob Chappell aboard the yacht ‘Four Winds’ in Tasmania in 2009.” (Source here).

Bob’s long-term partner Sue Neill-Fraser was convicted of Bob’s murder and sentenced to 23 years in prison, despite there being very little evidence to support the case i.e. no body, no murder weapon and no witnesses! This case is mind blowing - so many holes, so many unanswered questions and so little solid evidence:

“Why was mild-mannered, middle aged Sue Neill-Fraser convicted of murdering her partner Bob Chappell on their yacht in January 2009? It was a circumstantial case – no body, no witnesses, no weapon and no confession. Sue has always maintained her innocence and is now in her 13th year of a 23 year sentence in a Tasmanian prison. - For everyone who believes in justice, this podcast will be a shocking eye-opener about a case destined to be Australia’s worst wrongful conviction.” (Source here).

Throughout the Podcast:

“… psychologist and film producer Eve Ash shares her 13-year journey to uncovering the truth of Who Killed Bob, exposing the shocking and bizarre twists of the case and the unyielding and unfair justice system that sees Sue Neill-Fraser still behind bars as she awaits the outcome of her latest appeal.” (Source here).

Nine of the ten episodes are available now.

9. Island Crime: Missing Michael - Laura Palmer - Frequency Podcast Network.

Island Crime: Missing Michael is the third season of the Island Crime Podcast. Each season of Island Crime focuses on one crime that has occurred on Vancouver Island. This season the focus is on the 1991 disappearance of four year old Michael Dunahee who vanished from a playground in Victoria, BC. This case is “one of the largest unsolved mysteries in Canada”.

Host Laura Palmer conducts lots of interviews with family and friends of Michael as well as with some of the detectives that attended the scene of the disappearance back in 1991 to try and find out what happened to Michael.

There are three episodes of this Podcast currently available and as usual, new episodes are released weekly.

10. Families Who Kill: The Donut Shop Murders - Trooper Entertainment.

This true crime Podcast is about a “murderous family”, a family of serial killers whose crimes went “curiously unnoticed”:

“In the era of some of the most heinous serial killers of all time, one murderous family went curiously unnoticed: The McCrarys. Led by a psychopathic patriarch and his cunning son-in-law, this Texas clan roamed the country robbing, kidnapping, and killing up to 20 people, most of them taken from donut shops.” (Source here).

The stories told in this Podcast are disturbing to say the least. You get to hear the taped confessions of one of the killers although personally I found his so called “confessions” to be obnoxious and egocentric whereby he is the one constantly trying to “do right” but is coerced over and over again to commit the crimes by his accomplice. Of course he also puts most, if not all, of the blame for the many heinous acts that they carried out on his accomplice, his “confessions” just don’t ring true to me.

We also get to hear from some of the relatives of the victims. There are six episodes now available.

11. The Shadow Girls - Hosted By Carolyn Ossorio - Cavalry Audio & iHeartPodcasts.

The host of this Podcast Carolyn Ossorio grew up during the era of the American serial killer Gary Ridgway. Not only was he active during Carolyn’s childhood and adolescence, his chosen “hunting ground” was close to where Carolyn lived. Gary Leon Ridgway is more commonly known as the Green River Killer and has been convicted of 49 separate murders.

Ridgway preyed on:

“… on vulnerable teens and young women, strangling them, stripping their bodies of all earthly possessions and leaving them in the river and green spaces.” (Source here).

Growing up, Carolyn always remembers how his victims were “portrayed as ‘bad girls’“.

“The message was clear: that’s what would happen to you if you were a bad girl.” (Source here).

This Podcast is a in-depth look into the many crimes of Ridgway and it leads to never before heard audio being unearthed and secrets being revealed.

There are currently four episodes available and each episode is about one hour long.

12. Crazy in Love - Hosted By Courtney Armstrong, Stephanie Lydecker, Beth Greenwald - iHeartPodcasts.

Another great Podcast from iHeartPodcasts released in November 2021 and as the title suggests, this Podcast is all about love and the dark side of love which sometimes “makes us do crazy things”:

“Crazy In Love digs into the complex and contentious real-life stories of when beautiful love takes a gruesome turn. We explore the murderous lengths people went to in the name of love. Romantic love, motherly, brotherly and sisterly love, bestie bonds and lusty love. They can all make us a little crazy sometimes. Each week explores a new crime, told through a combination of interviews, news footage and narration.” (Source here).

As each episode is a new story, a new crime, you can pick and choose what episodes you want to listen to, that is what I have been doing! There are twelve episodes available so far.
