8 New True Crime Podcasts For You - February 2023!
I’m not sure if you even noticed that I took a break from the blog and it ended up being a slightly longer break then I had intended! The good news is during my break I spent lots of time listening to podcasts, so much so that I now have three new podcast blog articles coming up! This first new true crime blog is a great round-up of all the new seasons that are now available from all my favourite regular true crime podcast shows.
As always, I am listening on Spotify so any mention of available episodes is referring to what is available there!
1. Queen Of The Con: The Rich Girl (Season 3) - Hosted By Johnathan Walton - AYR Media & iHeartRadio.
One of my favourite true crime podcast series is back with season four Queen of The Con: The Rich Girl. This season host Johnathan Walton is on the trail of Danielle Miller. Miller lived:
“… a privileged ‘Gossip Girl’ lifestyle growing up in Manhattan and attending a fancy private school. Her mom was a Rockette; her dad was president of the New York Bar Association. But a cruel twist of fate and vengeance drastically and irrevocably altered her childhood, leading her to a life of scamming.” (Source here).
This is shaping up to be one of the best seasons yet! So hard to understand how Miller’s life took such a drastic turn and led to her essentially being disowned by her family and friends as they sought to distance themselves from her life of crime.
There are nine episodes available now - a great series to binge!
Another most recently featured season of this true crime podcast is Queen of the Con: The OC Saviour. Be sure to check it out if you like this new season!
2. Chameleon: Dr Dante (Season 5) - Hosted By Sam Mullins - Campside Media.
Season five of the true crime podcast Chameleon has dropped and I am very happy they didn’t keep us waiting too long for this new season! This season, in Chameleon: Dr. Dante host Sam Mullins is investigating the work of Dr. Ronald Dante:
“Dr. Ronald Dante is a talented hypnotist (and not an actual doctor) whose mind-bending schemes span decades. Dante worked the smoke-filled nightclubs of 1960s Hollywood and rode the self-help craze of the 1980s and 90s, hypnotizing women out of their fortunes, taking out hits on his rivals and opening up one of the biggest fake universities in history.” (Source here).
Mullins follows Dante’s trail and uncovers “… the unbelievable true story of the greatest con man you’ve never heard of.”
This is a wild story filled with drama and I am loving it - so entertaining! There are six episodes available so far.
If you like this new season of Chameleon, check out season four on my Top 9 True Crime Podcasts of August 2022 blog.
3. Suspect: Vanished in the Snow (Season 2) - Hosted By Matthew Shaer - Wondery & discovery+.
It took a long time, but season two of the true crime podcast Suspect is here!
This new season Suspect: Vanished in the Snow:
“… chronicles the disappearance of 12-year-old Jonelle Matthews. For three and a half decades, her disappearance was a mystery – a riddle neither authorities nor her family members could solve. The residents of her cloistered Colorado hometown had scoured every inch of prairie.” (Source here).
I am six episodes into this true crime podcast and big things are happening!
“… Jonelle’s remains were unearthed near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. With the discovery came troubling new questions: a man obsessed with the case also be her abductor and murderer? Had the truth been hiding in plain sight the entire time?.” (Source here).
If you like this season of Suspect, I featured season one in My October Podcasts blog if you want to check it out.
4. Smoke Screen: Deadly Cure (Season 5) - Hosted By Kristen V Brown - Neon Hum Media & Sony Music Entertainment.
Season five was announced a few months ago but only (finally) released this month. This new eight-part series Smoke Screen: Deadly Cure (one of my favourite podcast shows in general) was definitely worth the wait! While officially it falls under the “Society & Culture” genre, crime or crimes are also at its core so I am including it here.
In this new series, host and health journalist Kristen Brown investigates the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing and its founders, the Grenon family. Through their church, the Grenon family promoted and supplied their so called “Miracle Mineral Solution” (MMS) as a sacrament. This MMS substance is actually a toxic bleaching agent which can lead to serious illness and/or death. You might remember that a certain former US president spoke about using bleach to kill Covid-19 back in the height of the pandemic, well that proclamation is connected to this story!
The Grenon family:
“… convinced tens of thousands of people across the globe to buy a miracle liquid made of poison, the international conspiracy they ignited, and the people who fought to take them down.” (Source here).
In episode two we hear from Irish woman Fiona O’Leary who is autistic and has four children who are also on the Autism spectrum. O’Leary was shocked when she learned that MMS was being promoted as a treatment for Autism and began to campaign against those promoting it as such, and against those using it to treat their defenceless children with it. O’Leary was one of the core founders of what are referred to as “The Bleach Hunters”.
I am absolutely loving this podcast. It is so interesting and absolutely mind boggling! The first three episodes are available now.
5. Deep Cover: Never Seen Again (Season 3) - Hosted By Jake Halpern - Pushkin Industries.
Back for a third season, Deep Cover is true crime podcast show “about people who lead double lives” and I think this might be the best season yet!
This season begins with the disappearance of student Brooke Hensen from her home in South Carolina. Despite best efforts, Brooke cannot be found and her missing persons case goes cold. Seven years pass and out of the blue the Police receive a new tip about Brooke’s disappearance and the whole case is blown wide open. I really don’t want to give any spoilers so I will leave it there but believe me when I say, once you start listening you will not be able to stop. There are only two episodes available so far so get listening and be ready for episode three to drop!
6. Strangeland - Murder in Maple Shade (Season 2) - Hosted By Tinku Ray & Ben Adair- audiochuck & Western Sound.
The brutal murder of a mother and her six year old son takes place in Maple Shade, a “quaint New Jersey suburb” on the evening of March 23rd 2017. This murder rocks the neighbourhood as Police scramble to find who is responsible. However, six years later this case remains unsolved. Now the hosts of this podcast are on a mission to get justice for Sasikala and her son Anish and close this investigation for good. We are taken along with the hosts as they uncover new details, chase down new leads, question motives and deep dive into this heart breaking story. This is definitely a case that you would love to see solved.
There are four episodes (of fourteen) available so far.
7. Paper Ghosts: In Plain Sight (Season 3) - By M. William Phelps - iHeartPodcasts.
M. William Phelps is back with a third series of his true crime podcast show Paper Ghosts. In season 3, Phelps investigates the 1992 murder of college student Tammy Jo Zywicki. Tammy’s body was found 500 miles away from where her abandoned car was first discovered on the side of a highway nine days earlier. Phelps quickly highlights discrepancies and missteps in the Police investigation and starts to examine new suspects.
There are only two episodes available so far and I am waiting eagerly for episode three to drop!
8. I’m Not a Monster: The Shamina Begum Story (Season 2) - Hosted By Josh Barker - BBC Radio 5 Live.
At last there is a new season of the true crime podcast I’m Not a Monster and this season is The Shamina Begum Story. Host Josh Barker investigates the story of Shamina Begum who at the age of 15:
“… ran away from her London home with two school friends to join the terror group ISIS in war torn Syria. Now she wants to come back. It’s a tale that has gripped the world, but there are different ways to tell it.” (Source here).
Hearing directly from Shamina is making this podcast so interesting and captivating. The story told is mind-blowing - I just can’t get my head around the decisions made. Get listening to the first five episodes that are available now and let me know what you think!
I featured season one on my Top 12 Podcast Picks For February 2021 blog if you want to know more about it!
