6 Top New True Crime Podcasts of April 2026

I am back as promised with my April true crime podcast picks!

1. Nobody Heard Them Cry - Narrated By Nicola Barren - The Irish Sun.

First up is an absolutely gripping and equally heart breaking three-part Irish true crime podcast series called Nobody Heard Them Cry.

This is the story of a mother Esther, and her beloved foster daughter Jessica, who were murdered by her unrepentant and callous husband Frank McCann:

“Frank McCann tried to kill his wife and child four times to keep a dark secret from coming out. The swim coach secretly fathered a child with a special needs teenager in 1987, just months after marrying Esther O’Brien.” (Source here).

In this true crime podcast we hear from Ester O’Brien’s sister Marian Leonard as well as from McCann’s brother Bernard and the Gardaí who were involved in investigating this murder enquiry. These interviews give the listener a great insight into this case and really enhance the podcast experience.

All three episodes are out now.

2. World of Secrets: Searching for Soldier Dad - Hosted By Ivana Davidovic - BBC.

Next on the list today is the excellent true crime/documentary podcast World of Secrets: Searching for Soldier Dad. I’ve featured many/most of the previous World of Secrets series, they are so good!

In this podcast, host and investigative journalist Ivana Davidovic takes us to Kenya where she spent two years investigating how:

“British soldiers stationed in Nanyuki, Kenya fathered children with local women and, in some cases, abandoned them in a pattern of behaviour impacting multiple generations… The oldest child the BBC met during the investigation is now 70; the youngest just 3 years old.” (Source here).

This is such an interesting and eye-opening true crime podcast. Along the way we hear directly from the children and their mothers, women loved then promptly abandoned by the British soldiers who promised them the world and left them with nothing. Questions of consent and power (imbalances) are addressed. The legal rights of the children born to British soldiers/fathers are also discussed.

“The two-year investigation from the BBC follows UK-based international children’s rights lawyer James Netto and Kenyan human rights lawyer Kelvin Kubai, who grew up near Nanyuki, witnessing the struggles of these mothers and children. They worked alongside geneticist Professor Denise Syndercombe Court from King’s College London to help children in Kenya find their fathers. Together, the team searched commercially available DNA ancestry databases to identify British soldiers through DNA matching.” (Source here).

Host Ivana seeks to get answers to the questions of “why this pattern has persisted from when Kenya was a British Colony until today?” and “why mothers have been left without financial support and children have been left searching for their dads?” (Quotes directly from Podcast Ep.5).

This is definitely a podcast that you will want/need to binge as once you start you won’t be able to stop! All five episodes of this true crime podcast are available now.

3. Crime Next Door: The Beast of Birkenhead - Hosted By Olivia Graham - BBC Sounds.

On the 2nd of August 1986 the partially clothed body of twenty-one year old Diane Sindall was discovered in an alley near Borough Road in Birkenhead, UK. After an extensive Police investigation, a man named Peter Sullivan was charged and convicted of Ms. Sindall’s murder. However, a shocking thirty-eight YEARS later, DNA test results proved he was not guilty and Peter Sullivan walked free from the courtroom a mere 20 minutes later.

In Crime Next Door: The Beast of Birkenhead we hear all about this true crime story and the mistakes that were made which led to an innocent man being imprisoned for thirty-eight years while the real killer got away. Will Diane Sindall and her family ever see justice served for her brutal murder? While you can’t help but rejoice for Peter Sullivan, you are simultaneously trying to the understand the absolute turmoil that Ms. Sindall’s family are going through.

There are five episodes of this true crime podcast available now.

4. Blood Will Tell - Audible/Campside Media.

In the true crime podcast Blood Will Tell we hear the story of identical twin brothers, Anh and Trung, who are suspects in a murder which took place at a party they both attended. How reliable are “eye-witness” reports when two of the suspects are identical?!

This is so much more than a true crime story, its an interesting insight into the complicated relationship between identical twins, brothers who have always done everything together and protected each other every step of the way. But now, they have to come to terms with the fact that in this instance, they are very much individuals and on their own, needing to protect their own interests.

With some shocking twists, this true crime podcast will have you hooked from the start as Anh and Trung tell you their stories.

All six episodes are out now.

5. Dezi Freeman: The Hunt - Hosted By Michael Usher & Cassie Zervos - 7 News.

On the 26th of August 2025 two Australian police officers, Neal Thompson and Vadim De Waart-Hottart, were shot and killed, and a third police officer was injured, when self-proclaimed “sovereign citizen” Dezi Freeman (real name Desmond Filby) opened fire at a property in Porepunkah, Victoria (Australia) when the police officers attempted to serve him with a warrant:

“A well-known conspiracy theorist, Freeman, 56, gunned down two police officers on his property in the small Victorian town of Porepunkah last August, before fleeing into dense bushland and evading extensive searches.” (Source here).

Following the shooting, Dezi Freeman spent seven months on the run. This led to the biggest man-hunt Australia has ever seen. Additionally, a one million AUS dollar reward was also offered for information leading to his arrest, making it the largest reward ever offered in Victorian history.

Dezi Freeman was finally found and following a three hour standoff with the police, he was shot dead by police officers on the 30th of March 2026.

Over seven episodes, this true crime podcast tells us all about Dezi Freeman, his early life, his later years and how his beliefs led him to commit the murders and later die at the hands of the Australian police. This is a really engaging true crime podcast that you will struggle to turn off once you start listening.

6. Bridge of Lies - Hosted By Juju Chang - 20/20 & ABC.

Bridge of Lies is a true crime podcast investigating the murder of nineteen-year old Sarah Stern in December 2016 in a small New Jersey (USA) beach town. Sarah Stern’s case begins as a missing persons case when her car is found abandoned on a bridge outside of the town but it soon escalates into a murder enquiry as more evidence is uncovered.

Over six episodes we are taken through the facts of this case. We hear from various people involved in the case, including Sarah’s father, her friends and the police who worked on the case. The story takes a shocking turn when the suspect is named and they are someone known to Sarah, her childhood friend.

I don’t want to say any more about this tragic story, its better to hear it directly when you listen. All six episodes of this true crime podcast are already available.
